9/11 Tragedy Effect

After 9/11 tragedy, global security challenge has been changed. World have focused on terror being used as a weapon by the weak against the strong. There is no doubt because it was a horrifying disaster with more live lost of terrorism than in 50 years of terrorist attack in Ireland and Israel without any kind of unconventional weapon being deployed. In this passage I will explain some changes in global security challenge.

Firstly, change of International attitude toward terrorism. After WTC tragedy, United Nation Security Council approved resolution 1368, which reaffirmed the UN’s commitment “to combat by all means threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts”. Several time later, Security Council Resolution 1373 was approved. It called for the prevention and suppression of terrorism financing and greater exchange of the operational needed by UN members to fight terrorism. All of these commitments became US justification to attack Afghanistan in order to find Osama Bin Laden, leader of Al Qaeda that was responsible for the tragedy.

Secondly, in the pass global security was threatened by power which had great armies and high technology military capabilities such as fascism, and communism. Now, it’s threatened by power which has mass destruction weapon. Terrorism often target innocent people in order to create circumstance of fear, intimidation, and insecurity. Therefore many terrorists have relied on mass destruction weapon such as high explosive bomb, chemical, biological, and nuclear weapon. For example, suicides Bali bombing tragedy in 2003, terrorist used C4 high explosive bomb to attack two restaurant in the middle of the town. Besides that the discovery in 2001 of anthrax spores mailed in United States. However it’s more difficult to detect this power of terrorism than others power previously. Because it doesn’t appear over surface and it is usually underground activity.

Thirdly, war of terrorist is not the war between nations as previous war but it is global war between all of nations against terrorist violence and chaos. They find themselves in the same side and will cooperate to deny, contain, and curtail terrorist activity. For instance, there were cooperation between Indonesia Police, Australia Police and Malaysia police to solve and catch the suspect of terrorist attack in Bali bombing tragedy. Another example, in 2003 Indonesia Police sent some of their personnel to be trained by German Special Police to become anti terrorist police.

In conclusion, terrorist attack in New York September 11th, 2001 has change the global security challenge. Now the world faces on terrorist power which can be extraordinarily disruptive and violent. It’s very different with threat in the past, so all nations have to change their global security strategy in order to be prepared to defeat new horrible threat, terrorism.
